Again, traveling on business this week, I seem to have missed a dust-up that involved the Corporate Media finding a few “I wish Cheney had died” comments randomly posted on random blogs among about a zillion other comments and posts about topics here and there to prove their point that the blogosphere really is a fever swamp. (Can you say, “frightened?”)
Anyone who wishes these things on another human being is a lunatic, or at least really at the end of their rope where this Administration is concerned.
But it sure is stupid to post something like that on at least two levels. One, the more obvious, is that it allows people like Howie Kurtz to point out what a bunch of barbarians we are, for all the world to see.
More importantly, in case anyone has noticed, sudden, premature (or even mature) death results in almost instant deification these days. From Richard Nixon to Gerry Ford to Anna Nicole Smith, the 24/7/365 Media Man will trot out everything they can find to make as much news as they can about what a great/brave/fantastic/iconic American you were while we watch your funeral on TV.
I don’t want Bush, Cheney, or even Bill Kristol to die before their time.
That’s because I want them to live long enough to witness the destruction their actions had on this country. I want them to have to answer to their words and deeds until they are older and grayer.
I want to watch them interviewed long into our future of more frequent terrorist attacks, and I want them to defend their actions and respond to the judgments of history over the time they have left.
It isn’t physical torture, but I suppose it makes me a bit of a sadist. So be it.
